An article published this morning by Alexadra Burlacu of TECH TIMES explained that the Fitbit could be hacked in 10-Seconds! Why would anyone want to hack your fitness activity? According to security researchers, malware could be inserted into the fitness tracker, and subsequently be transferred to your computer when connected!
The vulnerability lies in the Bluetooth radio of the device which could be hacked from up to 15 feet away. To Fitbit's defense, a real world hack would require the malware to be developed and inserted onto the device, this part has not been done yet. I invite you to view the slides published by Axelle Apvrille, the security researcher who was the original presenter of this vulnerability at a recent technology security conference.
Despite this security development (which has been argued by Fitbit), I am still a firm believer in fitness trackers being used as a tool to motivate people toward their fitness goals. Interesting food for thought, but I wouldn't ditch your Fitbit!
